Old simple house plans - design inspiration
- keep the overall form and roof line very simple - this costs less to build
- use nice deep overhangs - this protects the walls, windows and doors from the elements
- create a good composition of windows - here picture windows are combined with double hungs and centered between the porch columns and the wall surfaces
- use minimal ornamentation - the window grid patterns and the exposed rafter tails are pretty much the extent of it here
- create a focal point - the simple shed dormer with louvers and the stair that is "captured" with side walls helps to create a center line and create focus on the entry
- give the house a base - the white clapboard siding provides a platform for the house to sit on and it contrasts nicely with the red shingle siding.

Finding Design Inspiration in Old Houses
- The proportions of the gable are quite nice - neither too slender or too squat with roof pitch neither too steep or too flat.
- I love the depth of the gable end roof overhang (this is called the rake end). The brackets underneath provide a sense of support for the overhang.
- The crown molding at the fascia creates additional shadow line and adds a subtle detail.
- A wide frieze board (that's the white trim on the wall below the overhang) provides a nice transition between the siding and roof overhang.
- The siding lap is nice and narrow. The proportion of the entire gable would be altered if the siding had a wider lap.
- I like the narrowness of the windows, and the fact the pair of windows are separated. Look closely and you can see a subtle little "pilaster" detail at the jambs and mullion. Also the trim at the head projects outward creating additional shadow line and interest.
- One thing I don't care for here is that the upper windows are nearly identical to the lower windows. I would rather see a bit of hierarchy - with the lower windows being a bit larger and more detailed than the upper windows. Another thing that bothers me slightly is the upper window intrudes upon the frieze board. It looks a little "crowded".

Quite possibly the ugliest plant I've ever seen...
I mentioned a few posts back that weeds aren't a particular problem when you balcony garden, but that things do sometimes float in on the wind and seed themselves in the containers. And sometimes they can be quite interesting plants - so when I saw this one sprouting at the beginning of the summer, I popped it into a pot to see what would develop.
What is it? No idea - some sort of succulent it seems. I was sure I'd never seen it before - it's not something I've noticed growing wild, but nor is it anything I've ever seen in a garden.
Well - not till a few days ago that is, when I was walking through the garden at the front of the house and found this, crawling its way up a lamp post ....
Quite possibly the ugliest plant I've ever seen.
How did it get there? That's not a plant that's been deliberated over in a condominium assembly for at least three hours and until blood has been spilled (mandatory for any decisions regarding the condominium). Someone has had the thing growing on their balcony and, in desperation, crept into the garden at dead of night and stuck it up the lamp post. Look how awkward it looks - that, I'm sure, is no natural climber.
To me, it looks as if it should be snaking its way insidiously across the ground. Did someone actually go out and buy it (worthy of a post on Great Gardening Mistakes of the Century) and thus infect my balcony, or did it float in on the wind to them too? I can imagine hundreds of the things spreading through the garden, choking the shrubs and the trees, and then reaching unstoppably for the buildings. We'll all wake up one morning murdered in our beds, tendrils sliding through the shutters and wound mercilessly around our throats.
Because I'm sure it's conscious and I don't think it's from this planet. Who said that intelligent life must be animal? This is something out of The Day of the Triffids or The War of the Worlds. It's here to take over, to wipe us out ...
And I'm growing one. No question that it's the same. Compare the close-up below with the photo of my little one in its pot. Should I kill mine now, bringing upon myself the certain wrath of its kin, or should I go on nurturing it, in the hope that when the time comes I'll be spared and kept on as some sort of servant? They'll need someone to bring the fertiliser, for heaven's sake.
The monster in the garden is already starting to evolve. Did the person who planted it there think he was rendering it harmless by tying it to a stake? He's only increased its rage, and sooner or later we're all going to pay. Look at those little bubble things on the tips of the "teeth" on the leaves. Spores which spread silently on the wind ...

A sorry sight ...
I've always had pelargoniums on the balcony. Common as muck they may be, but in full bloom they're glorious. And with a bit of protection they will not only over-winter, and but also sometimes keep on flowering . If you were reading this blog a few years ago, you'll know that I had one container of salmon-pink zonal pelargoniums that went on for two and half years - in all that time, even in January when it was wrapped up in fleece, there wasn't a moment when it wasn't in bloom.

Summer has come and passed...
The halogen patio heater runs on normal household electricity, unlike other heaters that require expensive propane fuel. The unit is also very adaptable - simply attach it to any standard umbrella center pole indoor or outdoors and voila - the area is magically heated!
So grab the family and head out the back door for one more barbeque in the great outdoors - until next summer that is.

Rumah 'Indonesia Indah'
Rumah 'Indonesia Indah'
Farabi Fakih

It gets better – this fireplace not only cool, but it also serves a more practical purpose (yes, appearance and s’more making aren’t the only important things in life). With rising energy prices and harmful impacts on the environment, the Bio Fuel Fireplace offers a clean, safe and environmentally-friendly heating option for homes with no harmful gases, smoke, ashes or soot.
So stock up on the graham crackers, chocolate bars and marshmallows, because there is a new fireplace in town and things are about to get hot.
